Christopher Place is thrilled to welcome local artist Morgan Howell for an exciting new pop-up exhibition. The artist’s unique giant 3-D interpretations of 7” singles by acts such as The Clash, The Beatles, The Who, Prince, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan would usually grace the walls of the RAC Club in London, or venues as far away as Russia and Texas. However, due to the current pandemic, Morgan, who was born and bred in St Albans, decided to bring his artwork home in support of his local community.
Morgan paints every crease, every tear, every imperfection of the original singles, producing one-off, truly unique artworks. With a cult following amongst musicians and the music industry, Morgan’s paintings are loved by vinyl junkies worldwide and his rendition of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” even hangs on the wall at Sony Music. His artworks also take the viewer through a sweeping social history of British culture from the colour and hippie vibes of the 1960s to the activism and political anger of the late 1970s and early 80s.
Morgan’s first-ever St Albans exhibition features 30 pieces, as well as some of the original singles he used as models. Local art and music enthusiasts will also be treated to an exclusive look at two debut pieces – “When Doves Cry” by Prince and “He Ain’t Heavy. He’s My Brother” by The Hollies.
Christopher Place Shopping Centre was the ideal location for the gallery as Morgan’s dad used to paint watercolours in St Albans Market and his mother-in-law used to visit the hairdressers that once occupied the same space where his exhibition is now!
Morgan said, “It’s great to have the opportunity to show my work in my hometown, particularly in such a lovely setting. It’s time for a homecoming exhibition. We have all naturally been more local during this horrendous period and I want to support the place where I’ve lived all my life.”
Catherine Morris, Christopher Place Centre Manager said, “Christopher Place is really pleased to be able to showcase our amazing local creative talent and support fantastic St Albans businesses. Make sure you come and visit the exhibition while it’s here.”
