Artist Doug Hyde’s Event

On Friday, 12th September, Clarendon Fine Art at Christopher Place, St Albans, welcomed one of the UK’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Doug Hyde, for an exclusive evening event.

From 6pm to 8pm, guests enjoyed the rare opportunity to meet the artist in person, hear about his inspirations, and view pieces from his latest collection. The evening attracted collectors, art enthusiasts and local residents, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Ahead of the event, a striking statue by Hyde was installed in the Mall, quickly becoming a focal point for visitors.

The piece embodied Hyde’s hallmark themes of joy, love and connection, and brought art into the public space in a way that was both approachable and uplifting. Passers-by were drawn to its warmth and playfulness, perfectly capturing the spirit of his work and sparking conversation throughout the week.

The Artist and His Work

Doug Hyde rose to prominence in the early 2000s and has since become one of the UK’s most collected living artists. Known for his bold use of colour and the recurring smiling figures that appear throughout his work, Hyde has always aimed to create art that is accessible, emotive and celebratory of life’s simple pleasures.

His work often centres on themes of family, friendship and optimism, striking a balance between tenderness and humour.

The St Albans statue was a continuation of this vision. Beyond being an eye-catching centrepiece, it symbolised togetherness and positivity — encouraging people to pause, reflect and smile.

For many, it offered a first encounter with Hyde’s art outside a gallery setting, providing a memorable introduction ahead of the event.

The evening proved to be a great success, blending the excitement of meeting the artist with the warmth and charm that his work embodies. With the statue in the Mall and the event at Clarendon Fine Art, St Albans became part of Doug Hyde’s ongoing story — a celebration of community, creativity and the power of art to bring people together.
